Upper Endoscopy
An upper endoscopy is a procedure, which allows doctor to look at the lining of esophagus, stomach, and duodenum by using a long flexible tube with the thickness just like a little finger. A tiny video camera and light at the end of scope that is placed down your throat. It allow doctor to find ulcer, cancers, and infection in your upper digestive system and is useful for explaining bleeding, swallowing problem, or abdomen pain. In EverHealth Clinic, we use endoscopies with medical center standard and wash machine to prevent the possibility of trans-infection and ensure the quality of procedure reliable.

How to prepare for the procedure ?
Do not eat or drink anything for 8 hours before this procedure.
Dentures should be removed before the procedure.
Please tell the doctor your drug history, past physical history especially glaucoma, drug allergy history, or any infectious disease.

What happens when the procedure performed?
Your will probably be given a “stomach relaxant” to relax your digestive tract and gascon to clear the stomach.
A local anesthesia will be sprayed into your throat to prevent you from having a discomfort (choking feeling) when the tube is placed inside.
You will be asked to swallow right at the time the tube is first placed into your throat; this will help guide the endoscope into your esophagus. And doctor will push it deeper into stomach and duodenum.
If a suspicious place is seen on the lining of digestive tract, doctor might use some small clippers at the end of scope to remove a tiny piece of tissue (called biopsy) to check under the microscopy.
Generally, it will take 3~5 minutes to perform the procedure.
During the procedure, it is normally for your feeling of nausea. Relaxation can help to proceed the procedure smooth.

Must I do anything special after the procedure is over?
You are required to have a rest at least 15~30 minutes before you leave without any complication.
You can drink water one hour after the procedure and resume a normal diet without choking.
If anti-anxiety medication is given, you must be accompanied by a relative/friend on discharge. You can not drive or operate any machinery or drink any alcohol beverage within 24 hrs.
You may experience minor sore throat and/or abdominal distension immediately after the procedure. These symptoms should gradually subside. Inform your doctors if these symptoms persisted.

When are the results available?
Your doctors can tell you right after the procedure what was observed in your upper digestive tract. If biopsies were taken, it will take one week before all the results are back.
